Public Holidays Utilities
by Emmy D. Bezzina

Chairman: ALPHA: partit politiku

I am sure that most of us have reflected on the utility of having, as occurred, recently, four out of seven days in a week as holidays when our country has a huge financial deficit for our size, and everyone has become aware of the problem that we do not have resources to be able to make our ends meet: hence why Government keeps increasing taxes, and hence why all the tension with people literally running after other people and threatening them if they do not meet whatever financial obligations or alleged obligations they may have!

On Wednesday, December 8th, Malta had a public holiday: forget, with respect, the Religious sentiments of the Immaculate Conception because Valletta was crowded with shoppers, commercial outlets were open by way of preparation for a commercialized Christmas Shopping spree, and hence in practice there appeared really no need to have such a public holiday.

Because of the proximity of Wednesday to a Saturday, a number of people opted for one of our now famous long-weekends, because not only did we have a weekend coming but an added bonus of Monday being yet another public holiday, December 13th: and this at a time when our children would be embarking on a number of ridiculous parties and then their Christmas Holidays.

Do we, all of us, really want this situation in Malta when things are so expensive, our country is so unproductive except for the use mainly of human resources, with the huge financial deficit that we have, with ever-increasing expenses and taxes that are being imposed on us, and with the tension in the air of many people spending more than they can afford, craving for more than they really need, and drowning themselves in debts which will only create more tension and more fears because these debts very often cannot be met: hence why usury is ever on the increase and the stories one hears behind the scenes are indeed frightful, as have come out in a number of recent cases before our Courts of Justice and thanks to the transparency of our Justice when we really want to be serious and have justice administered in a transparent way!

Hence the one basic question: if public holidays do not really have some utility for the needs of our country and its people, let us in the communal interest of each and every one of us do away with such useless public holidays because our country cannot afford them at the present moment in time!

Yours Truly:

Emmy D. BEZZINA:
