THE ROOFLESS THEATRE
by EMMY BEZZINA

PIANO`s conception [or whoever was behind it] of a roofless theatre has apparently not been taken in as a sensible idea at all. Why, therefore, does one because "legally" the nation`s finances are within that domain, be so hard headed that egotistical pride does not command an arrest of this seemingly idiotic notion which clearly has unnerved various sectors [not only a handful of "artistes"] of our people ?

Important projects such as the much-needed national theatre have to require the backing of the people who are financing it, namely Maltese and those who permanently abide locally. Importing Piano was a catastrophic initiative which nobody truly tackled with the determination of a people who are significantly aware of being taken for a ride! The people were not manifestly consulted. This could only be done via a Referendum.

The arrogance of our political maestros, in very similar vein to a number of other maestros who - like the flying rodents - pervade and invade the intimacy of our lives, are well aware that by and large this is a country whose people generally grumble alot, then like these few cultural hybrids, at the eleventh hour pretend to raise a bent finger to a scenario which was there, flagrantly visible before them, for a long time before!! So the political autocracy goes on, as does the reverential theocracy plod on, but transparent and accountable democracy despondently down trods!

Did anyone consider utilising the law to halt this rot? We are a law abiding country which in fact means that those who have the power [given to them by the people or thanks to the people] do what they like at the expense of the power donors who cackle alot but mainly stop at that demarcation line,as the indicated "list" of cultured individuals ( a number of whom are political lackeys ) would seem to imply.

There are legal remedies that could or might be resorted to, but the people lack the will to involve themselves so that their aspirations be enforced: many want to be counted and perceived as warriors for one objective or another, but equally many of them do not want to come out scathed from any battle of any kind that might be fought. At that vital juncture, the IFs, BUTs, Whats, Whose commence gurgling forth and then the whole fuss fizes off: so the political arrogance holds sway and the whole project will move on without any practical resistance at all: you`ll see dear artistes, that is as far as you go, have always gone, and never beyond!!
