EMMY BEZZINA`S EU Parliament Candidature

A call came from a friend this morning and enquired whether I was taking my EU Parliamentary Elections Campaign in Ernest - my reply was immediate, namely That apart from my normal schedule of professional work, I was in the midst of tough examinations related to the Magister Juris Degree in European Union & Comparative Law. In fact,I continued on Saturday, June 6th, 2009, ELECTION DAY, I will be exactly in the middle of my examinations time-table, half of the exams ready, the remaining half still to come: so those were TOP ABSOLUTE PRIORITY and it makes sense.

I have realized that most of my fellow EU Candidates have not the slightest inkling about how the EU Parliament functions and that though it is growing in its importance, it is still not the most vital of the established EU Institutions such as the Commission is, or the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg - my favourite EU Institution.

A Study Visit I made earlier this year in Brussels, Strasbourg, and Luxembourg got me in direct contact with all the TEU`s Institutions, namely the three I have already referred to, plus the Council of Ministers [ CONSILIUM ] and that of the Auditors. The experience in Brussels of visiting and experiencing the function ability of THE COMMISSION was enthralling but the realistic concept of the EU`s democratic deficit here plays a significant role.

The EU Parliament needs to be given greater authority and power considering that it is the only institution elected by the citizens of the EU Member States,a process that only commenced in 1979 as before since the 1950s,the Assembly as it used to be known, had hardly any say in EU Affairs but for consultation purposes and its Members consisted of parliamentary representatives from the Member States making up the European Economic Community as it was then known.

The EU as hopefully known now consists of 27 Member States and other countries like Croatia and Iceland appear not to be far off from being accorded full Membership status, but that still leaves a problem where it matters most, namely the feelings of the vast majority of the citizens of the EU Member States about the EU.

It is reckoned that out of about 375 million people eligible to vote, less than one third of that will actually vote - Malta being the exception where voting turnout will still be high. With all due respect, this voting emphasizes the ignorance of the vast majority of the local electorate about what voting for an MEP Candidate should signify and entail. Our voters do not apparently realize that this is not yet another contest between the REDs and the BLUEs, tinged with a little bit of Green, but it is a choice where the electorate should be guided as to why we need qualified persons,of independent mind, who should represent our country at the EU Parliament, not an extended delegation of either the Reds or the Blues: when will we Maltese learn to possess an independent and unmanipulated mind to determine what is best in the long run for our dear country ?

You can comment, dear friends, also on my e-mail: alpha@emmybezzina.org. I am the second on the Ballot Paper on the ticket of ALPHA LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY with no connection officially with any other name or Party on the same ballot Paper. Will be with you soon in an updated Blog. Thank you.
