NEW LABOUR LEADERSHIP:
DEMOCRACY DOES NOT SIGNIFY THE WHIMS OF ONE POLITICAL PARTY ALL THE TIME:
THERE HAS TO BE A COMPARABLE ALTERNATIVE

By EMMY D. BEZZINA

In the wake of choosing democratically a new Labour Leader, the MLP must not forget its electoral obligations to those who gave their vote to the Party: 48.7 %. It is with dismay that one observes that no explaination was forthcoming as to why our People must have a GonziPN governing when the majority of the electorate by a very simple mathematical computation clearly did not desire a PN Administration.

A coalition could have been possible, but surely the obvious truth must not be denied under a constitutional umbrella. The Labour Party by whatever appellative it will be referred to must show NOW that IT IS THE ALTERNATIVE PARTY......otherwise they might as well call it a day in politics.

Whoever is in charge at the MLP at present, as even that has become doubtful, must set forth an immediate Agenda for all those interested to be duly informed. I am in agreement with the suggestion that the MLP Deputy Leaders should with immediate effect resign; that The Party`s Executive takes collective responsibility for all decisions; and that there should be an Open Forum for anyone interested to project one`s intentions with a safeguard that these should be adequately diffused for one and all to be aware about them.

What is important that a deadline be set for anyone interested to make this intention known. Then must commence the long process of each prospective candidate making known the respective perspectives as to how the MLP is envisaged, what will be its objectives both immediate [ obviously putting one`s House in order ! ] and in the longer term. The MLP has to be restructured completely - we can now definitely state that the Mintoff era as it has overpowered KMB & AS is decidedly over and done with.

A number of potential candidates are being hinted at : possibly the ones coming from the outside circles stand a better chance of being more objective leaders-in-waiting.The insiders tend to have their respective circles: the latter are usually one`s undoing.

Whatever , the Electorate has shown that it did not want a PN Administration but just the same it got one, even if it is a Minority Government! Many are already doubting as to how long this Administration can govern - the new MLP must play a decisive role in this, so the Leader must be strong all round, in both his private and public life as these two roles will be come very often roled into one: Kate Gonzi I am sure has become an expert into how the whole family will be dragged, whether one likes it or not !

Despite the ironic electoral result which can only be described as a defeat for the PN but still the latter is in Government [ irrespective of whether it is legal or not apparently ! ], the MLP has to do a lot of soul-searching .

It must [ emphasize the word ] restructure itself at all levels & in every section even possibly altering its name to reflect a modern, pluralistic and cosmopolitan Party [ there are still cobwebs that date back to the Mintoff era ].The Party has to search, discover and find a strong liberal leader known for lacking aptitude for favouritism where the rights of each individual will be revered, second only to the supreme interests of the mighty Party.

This is a hefty Agenda......get on Labour, commence by cleaning your stables thoroughly, get in touch with those who were constrained by their righteous principles to forgo the Party, allure them back, give them a voice, let them have space, use their experience, eliminate the avaricious, open up your media outlets to those who do not see only to their greedy interests, and the Road to ultimate Victory will commence......it will take its time and toll, however. GOOD LUCK MLP.

Yours truly :
