The
current Governmental Administration is the antithesis of Good Governance:
it has become not only stale, but is souless to govern. Years ago following
the attainment of independence and sovereignty on September 21, 1964,
almost 46 years ago, the situation was almost identical. I recall some
years later, as I interviewed Dr. Vincent Tabone [CENSU] who had been
Foreign Minister in the run in towards Independence, him recounting to
me for a broadcast I was producing, that following "Independence"
the Nationalist Party had no other political objective to keep it enkindled.
Indeed the 1966 - 1971 period was one of the driest and politically bereft
seasons for the Nationalist Party, the last one under Giorgio Borg Olivier
[who was subsequently ousted by his own inner circle],paving the way for
a socialist victory by a one-seat majority (thanks to the miscalculated
Sixth District move) under the Labour Party led by DOM MINTOFF. The PN
under the new, young energetic team of Louis Galea, Austin Gatt, and others,
begun to re structure, a build up that took many years till they were
back in Government under a completely, different team in May 1987, sixteen
years later!!
The same is going to occur to the current Nationalist Administration.
The PN after the EU Membership in 2004 has completely lost track of governing,
much less of good governance. The country is being run by the circle of
the inner circle of the circle!
The latter include influential business manipulators who do the dictations
of who acquires what and who gets which: only the intimate insiders obtain
the juiciest cuts.
The people are truly suffering now. The EU imposes its Directives and
Regulations that a number of Member States [Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy
by way of examples] are finding it impossible to implement and enforce.
Malta is equally being effected.
The fact that we are tiny might give little concern to the EU Block, though
the pinch locally is being not only felt but many are finding it most
difficult to endure: just look at the number of VAT fines, for instance,
amounting to hundreds of thousands of €uro.
The PN is fast cracking notwithstanding the well-intentioned efforts of
some backbenchers, though Debono, Arrigo, Pullicino Orlando and others
hard as they try, are well aware that they are on a completely different
wavelength from the front liners. The PN must now bow out of Governmental
Administration - the so- called Cabinet reshuffle was enforced make-up
on a terribly wrinkled face. The Education Ministry debacle is the glarest
gravity of all, as the country will suffer no doubt. For his reasons,
the Prime Minister did not take the people`s message.
This leaves us with no alternative but to look to JOSEPH MUSCAT and his
team. Will we have a professionally trimmed, efficient, forward looking,
national oriented PL Government Administration? With the current team,
it does not look like it: Dr Muscat has to see himself as a national leader,
make his thoughts and beliefs be known to that influential section among
us that will not tolerate any hoodwinking and manipulation from no source.
We want a Government by THE PEOPLE, for THE
PEOPLE, with THE PEOPLE to echo that famous speech by the most successful
of US Presidents,No.16 - Abraham Lincoln.
The PL must open its MEDIA to the voices of EVERYONE, a move the PN always
ignored. The individual in the forthcoming Malta has to be respected right
to his fundamental beliefs. Everyone must be welcome in our country so
long as and as long as ALL are prepared to contribute to the advancement
of Malta. We must have a State that runs its own affairs as a State, not
dictated to or manipulated by other Organizations.
Meritocracy must overcome Nepotism, Ideas must give way to Mediocricy,
Initiative must overtake Inertia, Momentum must uplift pure Materialism!
The People must become the Circle into which all well-intentioned are
invited to enter into and participate. This must become the Malta to be
shortly.
