ABORTION ALARM ABSURDITY
By Emmy D. Bezzina
Chairman:ALPHA Liberal Party.

By now it would undoubtedly have dawned on even the slightest intelligence appertaining to members of our apparently still-insular,manipulated society, alias the indigenous population, that is to say the Maltese and Gozitans who are equally [supposedly!?!] members of a pluralistic and cosmopolitan European Union (without a Constitution),how in every conceivable conception absurd is the Abortion Alarm raised by the Government to obscure and tentatively cover up the alarmist state our country is in!

By now the proletariat, that is to say you and me,unprivileged citizens of a misled and misguided community, has grasped and realized that we are all being taken for a ride by a political circle and their sidekicks or by interested sidekicks and their political allies [AS YOU PLEASE or AS THEY PLEASE:a social farce in fragmented acts, written by Tonio Borg and a number of unspecified but easily identified co-henchmen – sic!]whereby to thwart our attention, the ABORTION Volcano was brought into eruption, where hitherto one could hardly attempt to discuss the subject and not be promptly silenced,as happened to me so very often. What a country – how easily do fools fall prey to the Machiavellian schemes of those who want to stick to power at any price!

But TRUTH will out – and the people have now perceived that this national, costly exercise is meant only to throw the electorate off scent to the real,conscientiously-perturbable matters that are afflicting this fair isle: namely, the overall dirt [in more interpretive ways than one can contemplate]that pervades our Republic, the exaggerated cost of living that few of us can truly cope with, the lack of work and incentives leading to it,the illegal immigrants debacle, the autocratic attitude adopted and applied by most of our national bodies(their members being for the most part appointed because they are well-seen by their appointers!),the rampant immorality that criscrosses the island`s four winds where the drug and sex barons reign supreme, and the overall disregard to the health of our people through a most unhealthy environment that engulfs us,no matter how much our Environment Minister determines to splash around in some pool strictly and solely on Environment Day!

With this very realistic picture of my country`s state-of-affairs,it could not but create mental hallucinations on the part of our incompetent, political authories who had to create an eruptible issue to shake public opinion and throw the WHITES against the BLACKS,meaning the hoodwinked and those who would not so be.!So what had hitherto been so unspeakable publicly became all of a sudden the talking point of practically every social occasion one merrily or otherwise attends.Hence the absurdity of this abortion alarm when in reality, there was never any need for it,as abortions have, are and will still keep being undergone, because that is the privilege of any pregnant creature who for reasons best known to that creature and that creature alone [certainly not our current Minister of Justice and Interior Affairs],it would be in the best interests of that pregnant individual to abort.I HAVE NO RIGHT TO ADJUDGE SUCH A PERSON – NO GOVERNMENT HAS A RIGHT TO CONDEMN SUCH A PERSON,much less a very unworthy Opposition, and certainly it would be an insult to the sovereign people`s intelligence, where such a matter be entrenched in our Constitution!

Even if we were to go by the party allegiance local syndrome, many are in agreement that there is no scope to have such an entrenched clause in our Constitution, and the Opposition could not demonstrate more how weak it is,if it were to fall into the political trap of the Nationalists and vote in favour of such an absurd entrenchment.

We seem to be oblivious of the fact that we are now Members of the European Union where our country must hitherto shed off its insular prejudices and put on the European pluralistic and cosmopolitan garb.Besides we are not only parties to,but the European Convention of Fundamental Individual Human Rights and Freedoms has been an integral part of the Laws of Malta since October 1987:hence we have to respect the fundamental, human rights of the individual after defining medically and legally when life in the womb commences, whether at conception or at the time when the foetus becomes viable to survive independently of the mother. The decision rests with the carrier of the foetus not with an entrenched constitutional Article.

It will be a shame on our weak Opposition if there is consensus with the Government to entrench an Abortion Article. This is not an issue of a free vote in accordance with one`s conscience,as otherwise `free` voting has to be allowed on all other conscience-related issues, such as divorce, gay rights, and so forth.Nor has it got anything to do with that silly question as to whether or not one is in favour or against Abortion – it is completely irrelevant. It has to do with the respect due to the political sovereign by its representatives who have no authority to determine private, intimate issues on a basis of majority/minority,free vote/entrenchment procedures.Individual rights must be determined by individuals:the State is obliged to provide the remedies.

Should we experience such an entrenchment,it might equally provide legal fodder for a case against the legal sovereign [Parliament] in discriminiating with the fundamental rights and liberties equally entrenched within our own Supreme Law!
